"Annual Doo" Guided walk of Royal Leamington Spa on Sunday 30th August 2026 at 1045hrs
Book tickets here and join other intrepid Tallistas for the every popular "Annual Doo" Sunday Morning guided walk of Royal Leamington Spa on Sunday 30th August 2026 at 1045hrs for an 1100hrs prompt start – the walk will last around 90 minutes – depending on what questions you ask! Tickets cost £6 per head and early booking is encouraged. Royal Leamington Spa has a magnificent history growing from the village of Leamington Priors into a Spa town marked by its mineral springs, beloved by royals. It had several periods of development, the first recorded as 1784 and a major expansion in 1814 with the opening of ‘The Royal Pump Room and Baths’, designed and built by C.S. Smith of Warwick at a cost of £30,000...! They still stand today and contribute greatly to the rich architecture of the town. The Spa treatment was claimed to cure or relieve a huge number of disorders, examples being ‘stiffness of tendons’, ‘rigidity of the joints’, ‘the effects of gout and rheumatism and various paralytic conditions’. The Spa water is a mild laxative which is one reason why the water was drunk. More recent developments and the renewal of the town have resulted in it being described as the “best place to live in the Midlands” and it’s recent flourishing digital economy has resulted in the attribution of the moniker "Silicon Spa"!
Royal Leamington Spa’s wide boulevards, stunning architecture and award-winning parks provide a sophisticated backdrop to this Regency town and are at the core of this walk, which will also address the history and development of the town from those early beginnings through expansions and more recent enhancements in the 20th and 21st centuries. A few anecdotes may be told!
The walk will be lead by volunteer guides from The Leamington History group and likely lead by Paula Fletcher, their knowledgeable Walks Coordinator & Tour Guide and David Blower. There will be one or two groups, depending on the number of tickets sold. The guides will have microphones and amplification to ensure that all can hear. More information as we get it!
