How the book came about...

It was supposed to be a relaxed weekend, with Jackie Timbs and Jim Briggs for company, at home in Hereford. They had come for a visit, to pick my brains about some of the stuff that I had done with the Club back in the old days and to chill out for a couple of days. In the course of one of the conversations Jim pointed out that a lot of knowledge about the Club, its history and its achievements in the early years, as well as factual information about height, was locked inside my head.

“You should write a book,” said Jackie.

I can’t say that I burst with enthusiasm for the idea, but figured I should at least try to write down some of the stuff we had been talking about. Well, I thought that 30 or 40 pages should cover it, but when I reached page 85, without having got through even half the notes I had made, I realised that, lo and behold, I was writing a book.

I ended up telling not only the story of how the Club came into being and developed during those early years, but also my story and how much my height has or has not been an influence on me. Of course, I included much of what I learned along the way about the many aspects of being taller than average, such as information on medical and other practical issues, so the book is both entertaining and informative – at least that is what I tried to make it. I avoided overloading it with every last little experience of every aspect of my life, and tried to keep it relevant to height in general and the Club in particular.

Several months (over a year actually), re-writes, edits, cuts and refinements later it is done!

They say that everyone has at least one book in them and Tall Man Talking seems to be mine. I expect it to be available from about mid-May 2009, both on the Club’s website and, a little later, through Amazon.co.uk, priced at £7.50. There will probably be some p&p to pay as well, but it shouldn’t be too much.

The book will definitely be available at the annual doo and, health permitting, I might even be there too.
